Prophets in the Quran: Ibrahim III

When Ismael was young, Ibrahim had a vision of sacrificing him. It was a dream he saw several times, and Ibrahim informed his son about it. Being a staunch believer in Allah’s plan, Ismael asked his father to do what he was told, and that he would find him to be among the patient followers of Allah. Ibrahim said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast,” [As-Saffat, 102].

When Ibrahim was about to slaughter his son, Allah sent a ram to be sacrificed instead of Ismael; and since then Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid Al-Adha in which they slaughter a sacrifice in remembrance of this grand event. Allah says, “And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,” [As-Saffat, 107].

Nearly 14 years later after Ismael’s birth, three angels visited Ibrahim and Sarah and informed them of their upcoming child. Allah says, “Then We gave her good tidings of Isaac and after Isaac, Jacob. She said, "Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!" They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allah? May the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable." [Hud, 71-73].

After a few years, Allah ordered Ibrahim to build the Ka’aba along with Ismael in Mecca. Allah says, “And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ismael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing,” [Al-Baqarah, 127]. When they finished, the angel Jibreel informed Ibrahim about the ritual of pilgrimage, and since then all believers travelled to Mecca to perform Hajj.

Allah gave prophethood to Ibrahim’s descendants, that’s why he is called the father of the prophets. This is not strange for Ibrahim who was named Khalil-Allah (the one who Allah took as an intimate friend). However, the best thing that can describe that great prophet is what Allah says, “Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]. And he was not of the polytheists,” [Ali ‘Imran, 67].
