A well-known Arabic proverb usually said in situations where a person has lost all patience is to remember “the patience of Ayyub”. Prophet Ayyub’s patience and endurance has set an example for all Muslims who are going through a lot of hardships and feel that they have reached the end of their tether.
After losing his health, his children and all of his wealth, Prophet Ayyub (PBUH) never lost his faith in Allah’s mercy. He persevered and remained faithful to Allah and to Islam.
“And [mention] Ayyub, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful."” [Al-Anbya, 83]
Allah eventually accepted Ayyub’s prayers and rewarded him for his patience and faithfulness.
"So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah ]." [Al-Anbya, 84]
Throughout his affliction, Prophet Ayyub’s wife never left his side or lost her faith. She supported him, nursed him patiently, and endured such hardship that it is considered a rare story of fidelity.
Her name was Rahima, which is Arabic for merciful. So, it is quite fitting that she was able to withstand such sufferings.
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” [Ar-Rum, 21]
Allah may have inflicted hardships and suffering on Prophet Ayyub, but it was also Allah’s mercy that provided him with such a strong willed and devoted wife.
