Surat Al-Bakarah is the second and longest chapter or surah in the holy Quran. It has 289 verses, 6,201 words and 25,500 letters. Its name ‘Al-Bakarah’ means The Cow. The recitation of Surat Al Bakarah has many benefits for Muslims, the most important of which is that Surat Al Bakarah protects those who recite it from the devil and the evil eye. It is known to ward off the devil from the house in which it is recited for three days.

In order to learn Quran with tajweed you have to encounter the Meem Sakinah and apply its three different tajweed rules for pronunciation: Idgham with Ghunnah, Oral Ikhfaa also known as Ikhfaa Shafawi إخفاء شفوي and Oral Izhar, also known as Izhar shafawi إظهار شفوي.

There are two different types of Hamzat which a reader would need to understand when they learn Quran with tajweed rules: Hamzat Al-wasl (همزة الوصل) and Hamzat Al-Qata’ (همزة القطع). Surat Al-Fatihah’s name means the opener, for it is the opening chapter of the Quran and it opens the link between the believer and Allah. The word Al-Fatihah الفاتحة came from the root word فتح which means to open.

Starting where we left off in our previous article, ‘Learn Arabic Pronouns (I-You-He-She)’, we will now continue with plural Arabic pronouns. Unlike plural English pronouns, that only deal with one form of a pronoun whether you’re addressing men or women, in Arabic, there are two forms of each pronoun; one for the masculine plural and one for the feminine plural. The only exception to this is the first person plural which has one form for both masculine and feminine usage. Other pronouns that do not exist in English are the dual masculine and feminine pronouns, used when you’re addressing two people of either gender.

In any language learning pronouns is fundamental. For pronouns represent the identity of a person. Pronouns can reveal many things about the person or people you are speaking to or about. In the many languages they reveal the gender of the person you're addressing and sometimes how many people you're speaking to or about. This holds true especially in Arabic, since many languages do not have specific dual pronouns. Not only does Arabic have dual pronouns, it also has dual feminine and masculine pronouns for the second person singular and plural, which we'll be discussing further in the next article in this series.

We previously learned that the Arabic alphabet has 28 letters in the article: Learn Arabic Letters: Part 1. And in the article Learn Arabic diacritics, we learned of the main diacritics used in Arabic. There is however, something called the Hamza, which is something resembling the characteristics of a letter and a diacritic. Before learning the function and rules of the letter Hamza (ء) in the Arabic language, we need to understand that the letter hamza (ء) doesn’t belong to the original 28 Arabic letters. It is, however, derived from the Arabic letter Aein (ع). It is most often seen atop or below the letter (أ) and acts like a diacritic. The hamza is one of the main vowels, which is pronounced like the letter /u/ in English: for example: the word ‘up’.

Diacritics are usually forgotten; however, they are extremely important in order to learn Arabic pronunciation. Diacritics تشكيل, pronounced as Tashkil, literally means Forming, which is its main function, since Arabic letters on their own, without Tashkil, do not show proper guidance as to the proper Arabic pronunciation. Therefore, learning diacritics goes hand in hand with learning Arabic.

In the second part of the journey, which is called Al-Miraj, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) met the Prophets as well as angels in heaven. When Allah saved Moses (PBUH) and his followers from the tyrant Pharaoh, they travelled to another land. On their way, the people of Israel found people who were worshiping an idol, and they asked Moses (PBUH) to make an idol for them to worship similar to the one of the people they saw. Ubayy Ibn Ka'b reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was near the tank of Banu Ghifar that Jibril came to him and said: “Allah has commanded you to recite to your people the Qur'an in one dialect. Upon this he said: I ask from Allah pardon and forgiveness. My people are not capable of doing this. He then came for the second time and said: Allah has commanded you that you should recite the Qur'an to your people in two dialects. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) again said: I seek pardon and forgiveness from Allah, my people would not be able to do so. He (Jibril) came for the third time and said: Allah has commanded you to recite the Qur'an to your people in three dialects. Upon this he said: I ask pardon and forgiveness from Allah. My people would not be able to do this. He then came to him for the fourth time and said: Allah has commanded you to recite the Qur'an to your people in seven dialects, and in whichever dialect they would recite, they would be right.” [Sahih Muslim 821 a, Book 6, Hadith 334]

Although it is condemned to envy anyone for having something you don’t have, it is approved to desire having a fortune like a prosperous man who spends his money helping underprivileged people. Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur'an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day." After surviving the great fire, Ibrahim’s fame grew bigger and reached, according to sources, Nimrod, the king of Babylon, who sent for him to question his words about Allah; Allah says “Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allah had given him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death," he said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west." Ibrahim, in Arabic, or Abraham, as known in Hebrew, was born in, what is today, Iraq. His people, including his father, used to worship idols. Ibrahim’s father used to make these idols for people to worship, but Ibrahim could not understand how these idols would answer people’s requests. Allah says, “And recite to them the news of Abraham, when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?" They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted." He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate? Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?" They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus," [Ash-Shu’ara, 69-74].

Prophet Salih was sent to people of Thamud, a tribe who started to worship idols, nearly 200 years after Prophet Hud. Like, the people of ‘Aad, those of Thamud were strong and wealthy, and they inhabited a place called Al-Hajr, which is now said to be in Saudi Arabia. Salih was good, kind, and wise; he was respected by his own people. He had only one mission which was to call his people to worship Allah.

In the Quran, there is a whole chapter named Hud, but who is Hud? Hud was descendent of Prophet Nuh and he was sent to people of ‘Aad. Allah says, “And to 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It must be carried out at least once in a Muslim's lifetime. It can only be carried out by adult Muslims, who are physically and financially capable to do so, as it requires travelling. Hajj is performed in Mecca, the holy city located in Saudi Arabia. Prophet Nuh or Noah is one of the greatest prophets in history. There are about ten generations between Nuh and Adam. After the death of Adam, people started to create statues of good people, who used to live among them before their death, and worship these statues, believing that these will protect them from evil. They even gave them names; The disbelievers of his time used to say, “never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr,” [Nuh, 23].

Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: “Do not make your houses as graveyards. In addition to this, verse number 282 of Al-Baqarah is the longest verse in the Holy Quran, and is called “The Verse of Debt.” Like most chapters which were revealed in Al-Madinah, Al-Baqarah illustrates many legislative provisions. Those mentioned in Al Baqarah are concerned with belief, actions of devotion, ethics, marriage, divorce, and a few others.

Ammar bin Yaser, a true believer, was born to Yaser bin Amer, a man who left his country, Yemen, and travelled to Makkah. He stayed in Makkah and lived there with his ally Abu Huthaifah bin Mughirah. Al Madinah Al Munawwarah comes after Makkah as the second sacred city in the Islamic world. It witnessed the migration of the first Muslim converts and the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. It contains the first mosque in Islamic History, and in it stands Mount Uhud. Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Ibrahim (PBUH) brought his wife and her son Isma'il (PBUH), while she was suckling him, to a place near the Ka'bah under a tree on the spot of Zamzam, at the highest place in the mosque. In those days, there was no human being in Makkah, nor was there any water. So he made them sit over there and placed near them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward.
