There are several Quran memorization approaches employed at Nour Academy. These approaches however depend on the student's level of proficiency in Arabic. There are three types of students who apply to our Quran memorization classes and our Quran recitation classes at Nour Academy.
Types of students applying for Quran memorization classes
- Students who are familiar with the Arabic language, and are able to read it.
- Students who can neither read nor understand the verses.
Depending on their knowledge of Arabic the following Quran memorization approaches are used.
Students who can read Arabic:
These students start off by reading a few Quranic verses (Ayahs) with their teacher. The teacher then corrects the student’s reading of the verses based on Quranic Tajweed and Arabic phonetics rules. This process is repeated a few times during the class until the teacher is positive that the student is capable of reading the verses correctly. As homework, the student is expected to practice reading the verses daily either by reading them from the Quran or using the verses during daily prayers. In the following lesson, the teacher reviews the same verses with the student by having the student recite them by heart and correcting him if there are still any mistakes.
In each session a student is given homework to recite the new verses he learned that day in addition to a larger group of older verses that he learned in previous lessons. The teacher goes through all of these verses with the student in the following session and corrects any gaps in memory or any inaccuracies in pronunciation or Tajweed rules.
Students who can neither read nor understand:
These students are expected to take a Nourania course, a type of course teaching Arabic phonetics or our classes for teaching Arabic letters. No knowledge of any Arabic is required to apply for either course. These classes teach students to how identify Arabic letters, correctly pronounce them, proper diacritics, Arabic vowels (Harakat), long vowels (Madd), resting sounds (Sukoon) and emphasis (Shadda). You can apply to the Nourania course here.
Nour Academy first steps:
Nour Academy uses a simple assessment test to determine a student's proficiency in Arabic before they can be started on the right track. There is also a curriculum specifically developed for children that you should ask for if you want your children to start Quran memorization.
