Following up on my previous article on learning “Quran for a Beginner P1”, it is important to mention that learning the Quran for beginners necessarily requires a student to have basic background knowledge about the form of the Quran as well as the context in which the Quran was revealed.

The context

You should bear in mind that the Quran was not revealed all at once but over the span of 23 years during the Prophet Muhammad’s life (PBUH). The revelations were the answers to the both questions raised by believers in order to guide them to Islam and in response to the criticisms of non-believers. It was compiled by the prophet’s companions after his death in order to help preserve it. However, the composition of the Quran is not in the chronological order of events of the life of the prophet (PBUH) but is rather ordered as the prophet had directed his companions to do so.

The Form

The Quran comprises 114 Surahs; a term for each chapter of the Quran. Each Surah is composed of Ayahs: which is the term used for each phrase or verse in the Surah. Each chapter except for one, which is at-Tawbah; (translated as “The Repentence”), begins with Bismillah al-Rahman al-Raheem "In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful." Each chapter has its own name that is relevant to the topic it deals with. For example, Surrat al-Bakarah, The Cow, is named in relation to the events that ensued with the Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people. "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow.'' (Al Bakarah 67) For a better understanding of this chapter, see the interpretation of Surrat Al Bakarah at this link.
